During a routine oil change last week, I was advised to replace the engine coolant. They said the recommendation was based on the 6-year/80,000-mile guideline. My car is a 2017 Subaru Forester with less than 40,000 miles. They emphasized that although my car’s mileage is low, the coolant should still be replaced based on time. So, I followed their recommendation. However, after returning home and having more time to research, I found that according to Subaru’s official manual, the vehicle uses a specially designed “Super Coolant,” which should be replaced at around 137,500 miles or after 11 years. I went back to the shop today and showed them the manual. This time, they said the recommendation was based on an inspection that showed the coolant was contaminated. They showed me the test strip they used, but there was no clear evidence that my previous coolant was actually contaminated. If that had been the case, they should have shown me the strip testing result last week when they first recommended the replacement. Anyway, I don’t want to spend more time arguing with them. I just feel very disappointed. Lesson learned: never say “yes” to additional services during a routine oil change without doing your own research first!
